Historically, early Juneteenth celebrations in Louisville often centered around Black churches and community gatherings, as public spaces were frequently inaccessible to African Americans. Louisville had a strong foundation of Black churches established before the Civil War, suggesting these institutions likely played a role in early commemorations of freedom.
